Choosing the right fur is a very important decision for your custom fursuit. The texture, length and durability of faux fur will directly affect how your finished head or partial suit looks and feels.
Short‑pile Fur
Short‑pile fur usually has a fibre length of 8 mm‑15 mm. Pros:
- Holds shapes very well, great for sharp facial expressions.
- Less shedding after trimming.
- Easier to maintain and brush. Best for: Anime‑style fursuits, characters with clean, crisp face designs.
Medium‑pile Fur
Pile around 20 mm‑35 mm. This is our most commonly used standard fur. Pros:
- Balanced fluffy look without being overly shaggy.
- Works for most wolf, fox, cat and canine characters.
- Good balance between appearance and wear‑resistance. Best for: General‑purpose fursuit heads, partial suits and most OC designs.
Long‑pile Fur
Long‑pile fur is 40 mm‑80 mm or even longer. Pros:
- Super fluffy, dramatic, big‑hair fantasy effect. Perfect for mythical creatures. Cons:
- Shedding is more noticeable.
- Harder to keep neat; fur may get messy quickly after wearing.
- Trimming long fur takes extra work, which increases commission cost. Best for: Fantasy species, dragons, unicorns, big fluffy mane characters.
What about fur colours?
We work with the stock colour range from Furlab Supply. If your OC has very special, custom‑mixed colours:
- First check whether we already have that shade in‑stock.
- If your required colour is out of our stock range, you can ship your own fur material to us.
Please note: We cannot guarantee exact screen‑to‑fur colour match. Monitor displays vary greatly. A physical fur swatch is always the most reliable way to check colour. We can send small fur swatches for you before production upon request.
Practical tips for picking fur
- Think about how often you will wear the suit. If you plan to attend many conventions, medium‑pile fur is usually the most practical daily‑wear choice.
- For faces, avoid extremely long fur, or facial details will be covered and your expression will be lost.
- Bright neon colours will fade faster under direct sunlight. Keep this in mind for outdoor photoshoots.
